Obituary

William I. Dietch, 80, died August 24, 2003 surrounded by his loving family at home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 27 at the Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, with Pastor Claude Jones officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.

William I. Dietch, the son of Daniel A. and Maude L. (Knouse) Dietch, was born September 22, 1922. He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1940 and immediately enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed in the Philippines where he was captured and held there and in Japan as a prisoner of war until 1945. Bill continued to serve his country until retiring in 1960 as a Chief Warrant Officer. Bill then earned his degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He retired in 1985 from the State of Iowa Board of Inspections and Appeals. Bill demonstrated by example his strong values of patriotism and serving the community. He was a member of the VFW, POW Association, LINK Associates and Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Bill enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing cards with his many friends. At home, his garden and yard provided him with many hours of relaxation. To his family, he was "Mr. Fix-it" since he was able to accomplish all home repairs.

William is survived by his wife, Violet of Urbandale; three sons, William Irving Dietch, II of Newton, David (Jacque) Dietch of Urbandale and Michael Dietch of Ankeny; two daughters, Patricia (Daryl) Hertema of Midland, MI, and Jo Ann Dietch of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Susan Blythe of Conrad; and eight grandchildren, Sarah and Stacy Dietch, Ryan and Kari Dietch, Heather and Jon Hertema and Daniel and Jeremy Dietch. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bob and son, Daniel.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Westover Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to his church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
