William J. "Bill" Hancock, 94, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Wesley Acres Health Center in Des Moines. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service honoring Bill's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Monday. Entombment will follow the service at Masonic Mausoleum in Des Moines.

Bill was born July 12, 1913 in Des Moines to William Eugene and Signa Grace Hancock and was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. He was a graduate of East High School and the Des Moines College of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1940. He was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association for over 75 years.

Bill joined Allied Insurance Company in 1941 and served that company for 37 years, retiring in 1978 as Senior Vice President and Secretary. He served on the Board of Directors for many years following his retirement. During his Allied tenure, Bill was active in national and state insurance organizations. He was one of the founders and first officers of the Iowa Defense Counsel Association in 1965.

Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Hancock and her husband, Thomas Bergantino of West Des Moines and Pamela Hancock of Overland Park, KS; one grandson, David Hancock Moon and wife, Julie of Chicago, IL; and two nieces, Linda and Susan Wheatcraft of Arizona. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Nedra; his parents; brothers, Lloyd and Richard; and sister, Helen Marriott.
