William John "Bill" Gibbons, 77, passed from this life on Saturday, June 23, 2007, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.

Bill was born on March 4, 1930 in Madrid, Iowa, to Charles Sr. and Mary Yaske Gibbons. He married Dolores A. "Dode" Brugioni on July 8, 1950 in Carney, Iowa. Bill was employed with Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. for more than 37 years, until he retired on November 1, 1985. Following his retirement, Bill was employed with the former Shepard Furniture Store of Madrid and also with Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home for 22 years, until he became ill in spring of 2007.

Bill was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and a former member of the United Rubber Workers Union Local 310. He enjoyed volunteering at the Church, working on many festivities, cooking many dinners and constructing new landscape designs. Bill also loved to garden, spend time in his yard, work on clocks and go fishing. He loved polka dancing and also spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 57 years, Dode Gibbons of Madrid; four children, Steven (Sue) Gibbons of Ankeny, Nancy Gibbons and Mike (Diane) Gibbons both of Madrid and Ann (Dave) Nelson of Gilbert; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" (Rosemary) Gibbons Jr. and Jack (Marla) Gibbons both of Madrid; five grandchildren, Amanda Gibbons & Sean Gibbons both of Ankeny, Zach Gibbons of Madrid and Samantha Nelson & Jake Nelson both of Gilbert; and a host of many friends and extended family. Bill was preceded into eternal life by his parents; and one sister, Grace Perrier.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, where a parish scripture service will begin at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to either St. Malachy's Catholic Church or Edgewood Park, both in Madrid.
