Obituary

William S. Joseph, 90, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. He was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 24, 1917 to Burton and Irma (Friedlander) Joseph. They moved to Des Moines when Bill was 4 where he lived the remainder of his life. He attended Grinnell College, and while there, opened his own Joseph's Jewelry Store. In 1939, he joined the family business in Des Moines, Joseph's Jewelers. In 1962, Bill became president of Joseph's, a position that he held until his retirement in 2000 at the age of 83. Bill and his brother, Burton, were instrumental in guiding Joseph's to become an internationally recognized leader in the jewelry industry. During this time they opened two additional jewelry stores.

Bill was active in the Des Moines community. He served on numerous boards including the Salvation Army and Kiwanis. He was past president of the Iowa Retail Jewelers Association and the Retail Merchants Board. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Nothing made Bill happier than being with his family and friends. He had an uncanny ability to build lasting friendships from all walks of life. He loved playing golf and bridge. Because of his fun-loving and social personality he touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Terry and her husband, Charles Ciecko of Oregon; Lynn and her husband, Don Svitak of Colorado; son, Randy Joseph of Colorado; and seven grandsons. His wife, Mary Ann Glayston Joseph, preceded him in death in 1963.

Private family graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery. The family will hold a Celebration of his Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House or the donor's choice.
