Willis Thuernau Heiden was born October 16, 1920 in Chicago Heights, IL, the son of George and Helen Heiden. He moved to Des Moines in 1936 and graduated from East High School in 1939. He was a US Navy WWII Veteran. On April 21, 1946 he was united in marriage to Bernice Haas in Hamburg, MN. Bill worked as a mail carrier for the Des Moines US Postal Services for over 30 years. He retired in 1980. When Veterans Memorial Auditorium opened in 1955, Bill began as one of the main ushers. After 30 years, he retired as a co-head usher.

Having been baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, Bill lived his faith in his loving care for his family and all who knew him. He was a man who could be depended on, a pillar in his church, and he could bring a smile in any situation. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1936 where he was a member of the Fellowship Society, sang in the choir for 50 plus years and served as an elder, trustee and usher. He also served on the Board of Directors of Luther Park. Bill was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed reading, golfing, fishing, gardening, riding his bicycle, and being outdoors. Most of all Bill loved his Lord and his family.

Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bernice; his four children: Cheri (Stuart) Tietz, Lincoln, NE, Marc (Denise) Heiden, Urbandale, Robin (Bob) Fossum, Aloha, OR and Kurt (Cara) Heiden, Urbandale; 12 grandchildren: Erin (Jake) Dahlke, Kori (Chad) Belton, Adam Tietz and Nathan Tietz, Justin (Christina) Heiden, Brian (Kristin) Heiden, Jackson Heiden, Baylee Heiden and Katie Weigel, and Erica Heiden, Emily Heiden and Ellen Heiden; 2 great grandchildren: Lydia Dahlke and Lyla Heiden and a third one on the way - Benjamin Heiden; brother, Harry (Lynda) Heiden, Punta Gorda, FL, brother-in-law Wally (Linda) Haas, Milwaukee, WI, brother-in-law Bill Behm, Tucson, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.
