Obituary

Winton George Znerold was born on June 8, 1923 in Warren, Minnesota, the son of Manda and George Znerold. On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, he died at Edgewater due to Covid-19. He is now reunited with his first and only love, his wife, Gwen Znerold.

Growing up in Warren, the oldest of three children, he kept very busy. He worked the farm with his grandparents, held jobs in town and was an accomplished athlete and student. Wint played football, basketball and baseball during high school, but his true love was baseball. He was offered a semi-pro baseball contract, but due to the war, he couldn’t accept it.

Wint met Gwen in South Dakota while he was working for the Creamette Company and she for a bank. The story goes that he would always line up behind her teller window, even if there was a wait. He was a bit on the shy side but finally asked her on a date. Gwen would say that before saying yes, she looked at his bank account. That first date started a life long love affair of undying affection, mutual respect and support.

He and his family moved from Huron, South Dakota to Ankeny to Minneapolis and all the while traveling quite a bit. He wanted more family time so in 1963, he bought a food brokerage in Des Moines, and the family put down roots in Iowa. His stellar work ethic and his incredible way of building relationships, built the small brokerage into a very successful company.

Wint loved the game of golf and was a lifetime member of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. Wint and Gwen bought a home in Rancho Mirage, California where they spent much of the winter. They loved their California home and the many friends they cherished over the years. Along with golf, Wint spent time volunteering in a local elementary school in California. The many children he tutored loved Papa Wint. Wint was also an avid gardener and nurtured and lovingly tended his beautiful gardens as he did his family.

Wint was a family man. He was an incredible role model and inspiration for his children, friends and colleagues. He believed and lived his values of kindness, respect and treating everyone as he would want to be treated. Wint was loved by all who knew him. Throughout his life, he gave his time and his love completely.

Left to cherish and honor his memory are his three children: sons, Mike and Steve (Marla Lacey) and daughter, Mary (Fred) Bussone; sister, Judy Znerold; Eight beautiful grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel and Christopher (Mike), Shannon and Christine (Mary) and John, Katie and Ann (Steve); and three great grandchildren Elliott (Sarah), Ziggy (Rachel) and Leo (Christopher).

His deep love of family was a gift to all of us. He always, in every way without fail, put his family first and foremost. We are eternally blessed and beyond grateful to have been lucky enough to have him as our dad.

The family would like to thank the Edgewater Woodbine staff for their tender and loving care of Wint throughout his stay. Their sacrifice during this difficult time is humbling and so deeply appreciated.

Private family services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, November 23 at Iles Westover Chapel and live-streamed from Wint's obituary page at www.IlesCares.com. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
