Obituary

Zoe Elliott Nichols, 91, of 4111 Ingersoll, Des Moines, died in Denton, Texas of lymphoma on November 21, 2011. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines. Family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m., to 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at a later date at Glendale Cemetery.

Mrs. Nichols was born February 20, 1920 on a farm near Mt Ayr, Iowa where her father, Mark Elliott (Ilah) was born. She was the second of five children, and lived there until her marriage in 1940 to Donald O. Nichols, eldest son of J Tom and Verda Morgan Nichols, also farming there. She graduated from Mt Ayr HS in 1936; took one additional year of HS while working in the office of Principal E.G. Brockman. She assisted J.W. Hill MD for one year, and taught Crown Point Country School for two years before her marriage. Except for a few years in Kansas City, KS the Nichols lived in Des Moines, and were members of First United Methodist Church. She retired after 20 years with the Iowa Annual Conference, United Methodist Church. Earlier employment was with Corwin Cleaners, Iowa Society Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), and Des Moines School Board, Iowa Council of Churches and the Christ and Windsor United Methodist churches. She volunteered many hours with her church and Iowa Methodist Hospital. She was a member of the Greater Des Moines Volkssport Association.

She is survived by a son, Brian Nichols (Linda) of Denton, TX; daughter, Ann Alton of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Loren Elliott (Alma) of Mesa, AZ; brother-in- law, Lyle Nichols (Mildred) of Austin, AR; sister-in-law, Lorraine Nichols Reasoner of Mt Ayr, IA; brother-in-law, Roy G. Ives (Sally) of Des Moines, IA; eight grandchildren: Paul Nichols, Scott Kimball, Kristine Nichols, Steve Nichols, Brian Nichols, Jr., Sarah Bowen, Stephanie Nichols and Kristin Nichols; four step-grandchildren: Melissa, Teresa, Amy and Todd (Lissa); eight great grandchildren: Christian, Angelica, Giselle, Cody, Amanda, Waylon, Will and Avery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; son David; friend, Chuck Eoriatti; son-in-law, Dave Alton; sisters, Doris Elliott and Lois Cox Ives; brother, Jack Elliott and sister-in-law, Mildred Elliott; sister-in-law, Betty Bradley and her husband, Walter; and brother-in-law, Lyndon Nichols.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or Pastoral Care Services at Iowa Methodist Hospital.
