Obituary

Ida Trier, 98, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of kidney failure. (Not bad considering she was born with only one functioning kidney.)

Ida was born June, 13, 1914 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to Helmer and Hannah Olsen. Ida grew up in the logging town of Drummond, Wisconsin and was very close to her only sister Alice (Hardie). Ida and her parents left Drummond in 1931 after the Sawmill closed. They moved to Rice Lake and then Chippewa Falls during Ida's senior year in High School. Ida graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1932.

Ida entered Nursing School during the great depression, graduating in 1935. Ida then worked as an OR nurse in Eau Claire Wisconsin. It was in the operating room that she met then medical student, Paul Trier. Ida and Paul were married in 1939.

After Pearl Harbor and two years of marriage, Paul was drafted into the army. For two years they traveled around the country while Paul attended service training schools, before he was deployed to Saipan. An extensive interview with Ida concerning pre deployment training revealed nothing more than the Greatest Generation doing their duty. When the War was over, they went on with the business of living.

After the war, Paul entered a residency in Internal Medicine and then Radiology. They moved to Des Moines in 1950 where Paul became the Chief of Radiology at the VA Hospital. Leaving Wisconsin was difficult. In 1952, Ida and Paul bought a cottage on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. Ida and her family have vacationed and maintained lifelong friendships and family ties to this day.

From 1951 to 1955, three children were born, Jane, Frances, and John. Plans for a bigger house began. In 1956, Ida and Paul commissioned famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design a house for them. This was one of their greatest adventures. Ida has lived in the house ever since. Ida's house was always open to fans or followers of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Since Paul's death in 1976, Ida has maintained her home and lived in comfort, enjoying her friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ida continued her vacations in Wisconsin and the Trier cabin continued to be a magnet for Wisconsin friends and family to gather--even to this very day. Ida's greatest love has always been her family.

Ida's memory will be cherished by her three children, Jane Paulsen (Ken) of Johnston, Frances Sloan (Steve) of Polk City and John Trier (Barb) of Adel; her grandchildren, Anne Sitrick, Jessica Jones, Justin Ahrenholtz, Sara York, Jennifer Oredson, and Jim Trier, seven great grandchildren, her special niece Ruth Hardie Shane and cousin Ron Lee. Ida was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Paul Trier, who passed away in 1976, her sister Alice and her parents.

The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. - noon, on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. According to Ida's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a private committal service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to ChildServe. Online condolences may be sent to IlesCares.com.
