Marie Maxine McGhee, 94, entered eternal life with her Lord and Savior on September22, 2018 at Bishop Drumm in Johnston, IA after complications of a stroke.

Marie was born at home in Sidney, IA to Tillie and Floyd Redenbaugh on December 2, 1923. Marie was the oldest of eight siblings. She grew up in Sidney with her three sisters and two brothers. She remembered a loving happy family, the Sidney rodeo, playing with paper dolls, reading and fresh biscuits and jelly at her grandmother’s house up the hill. The family moved to Kansas City, where more work was available to support the family and her two youngest brothers were born.

Marie graduated from East High School in Kansas City and attended secretarial school. She married Gerald Smith on May 17, 1942. Soon after they were married, he was drafted into the US Army Air Corp., to serve in WWII. She followed him to Florida until he was deployed to Europe and North Africa. Following Gerald’s discharge, they made their home in Kansas City, and immediately started a family, Janice was born in 1946 and Diane in 1953. She helped Gerald with the construction of their home near Raytown, where they lived until 1963. Gerald’s career took them to Gladstone, MO, Henderson, KY, Houston, TX and back to Kansas City in 1980. In 2009 she moved to the Des Moines area to be close to her family.

Her faith and love of Jesus Christ has sustained her throughout her life. Marie was a member of Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO for over 30 years.

Throughout her life, Marie was a homemaker, secretary, artist, China painter, ceramist, painting teacher and loved life and people.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Diane Berman; her husbands, Gerald Smith, Bill Williams and Harold McGhee; two sisters, Lois Potts and Barbara Gibbons; three brothers, Earl, Tom and Ralph Redenbaugh.

Those who are left to cherish her life are daughter, Janice and son-in-law, Mark Globuschutz; son-in-law, Marshall Berman; sister, Vera Jeanne (Jack) Raney; brother, Jim (Darlene) Redenbaugh; sister-in-law, June Redenbaugh; special friend, Clayton Kennedy; grandchildren, John Logsdon, Jr., Beth Logsdon(Craig) Deen; and Michael Berman; step grandchildren, Candice Johnston and Marcus (Amanda) Globuschutz; great grandchildren, Lauren Logsdon, Evan Logsdon; Spencer and Grant Pangle; step great grandchildren, Lolly, Holt and Thompsie Johnston; and Madison, Jaxon, Alex and Jayce Globuschutz; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A celebration of her life will be held at Westkirk Presbyterian Church in Urbandale on October 4, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 AM. Additional services will be held at Gashland Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO at 11 AM, Monday, October 22, 2018. Her final resting place will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, MO.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s association.
