Obituary

Richard G. Book, 64, passed away at his home on October 21, 2018.

Richard is survived by his wife, Karen Glomski; daughters, Heather Green (Jeff), Katherine Book (Matt Rossi), and Laura Book, and granddaughters Lizzie and Allie Green.

Born in Des Moines to Chester and Anna Mae Book (Gittins) on March 22, 1954, Richard graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1972. He earned his B.A. in Biochemistry from Northwestern University in 1976 and a Juris Doctorate with Honors from the University Of Iowa School Of Law in 1979.

Richard practiced law in the state of Iowa, his career spanning nearly 40 years with the Huber Law Firm in West Des Moines where he was a partner, specializing in workers’ compensation and personal injury law.

Richard was a parishioner at St. Theresa Catholic Church with his family for the past 12 years, regularly serving as an usher. He enjoyed his annual family vacations to Door County, Wisconsin for ice cream at Wilson’s, mini-golf at Pirate’s Cove, and spending time at the Lake.

Tennis was a decades-spanning hobby for which Richard was well known, and he also garnered admiration throughout his neighborhood for his outdoor Christmas and Halloween decorations.

Richard was a diehard Northwestern Wildcats football and basketball fan. He was an avid reader, especially enjoying books about history, an interest he shared with his wife and passed along to his daughters. Richard was a reliable handyman on the home front, embodying a broad range of do-it-yourself talents.

Above all, Richard’s discerning palate ensured that an appreciation of food was synonymous with a celebration of family. He welcomed every adventure to a new restaurant; he mixed cocktails to help his family usher in the weekend; and he adored his wife’s cooking.

Richard is additionally survived by his siblings, Larry, Susan, Deanna, Janet, Cindie, and Steven. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Chester and Anna Mae Book, and his brothers, Glenn and Bob.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., November 10, 2018 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5-8:00 p.m., November 9, 2018 at Iles Westover Chapel. Private interment will be held at a later date. Per Richard’s wishes, donations may be sent to St. Theresa Catholic Church.

A hard-working man who approached his career with a dutiful and dignified work ethic, Richard nevertheless lived above all else for his wife and his three daughters. There were never higher priorities. His love for his family will live on.
