Obituary

Arvin John DeCook was born on a farm in Marion County August 13, 1932. He died Thursday morning, November 8, 2018, at Deerfield Health Center where he lived for more than four years following a severe stroke. A visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11:15 a.m. Monday, November 12, at Meredith Drive Reformed Church, 5128 Meredith Drive, Des Moines.

Arvin attended a one-room country school for his first eight grades, followed by junior high and high school in Pella, graduating in 1950. His pride and joy after his senior year was a 1949 Ford convertible given to him by his parents as a “thank you” for his sacrifice of giving up sports because he was needed to help on the farm after his dad lost part of his hand in an accident. After a year working at home, Arvin enrolled in Central College. Following his first two years at Central, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in Korea, and while there, was privileged to sing in a military choral group that performed concerts at air bases throughout the Pacific Theater. After two years in the military, Arvin returned home to marry Ruth Lubbers of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin. The newlyweds lived in college barracks for two years until he graduated in 1957 with a BA in business. Arvin was hired at National Travelers Life, spending the bulk of his career in marketing and recruiting. Following his retirement in 1986, he spent several years in personal sales.

Arvin was an active member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church, serving as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He especially enjoyed his time on the church’s evangelism committee. He loved his family and his Lord and savored every moment he spent with his grandchildren. Arvin enjoyed woodworking, restoring antique furniture, trips to visit Wisconsin relatives, and winters in Arizona where he played golf and pickleball. He was a Grimes Lion’s Club member for many years.

Arvin is survived by his wife, Ruth, his sister Dorothy (Maynard DeVries), and his brother Mark (Kay); three daughters, Carla (Kevin Kregel), Greta (Ross McCarty), and Sara (Steve Davis); six grandchildren, Nathan McCarty (Ashley), Nick McCarty, Hannah (Kregel) DeJong (Luke), Jack Kregel, Dylan Davis, and Emma Davis; and two great grandchildren, Jacob and Maddie McCarty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meredith Drive Reformed Church or to a charity of choice.
