Ray Chartier, 90, died Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at Unity Point Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, December 7, at Dallas Center United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Brethren Cemetery there.

Ray was born, July 1, 1928, in Clyde, KS to William and Esther (Good) Chartier. He graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1945.

Ray was a member of the Dallas Center United Methodist Church since 1948 and served as a member of the board of trustees and on the administrative board. He went to work at the Dallas Center Farmers CO-OP Co. in 1945 where he worked for 42 years. He served as General Manager for 25 of those years and retired on June 30, 1987, the same day the CO-OP became Heartland CO-OP.

Ray served on the Dallas Center City Council, was President of the Dallas Center Commercial Club, President of the Dallas Center Rotary Club, and was the General Chairman of the Dallas Center Centennial Celebration in 1969.

Ray served on the Board of Directors of Farmers Grain Dealers Assn of Iowa and also served 18 years on the FGDA Retirement Board.

In 1972, Ray was listed in the National Book of Who’s-Who in Finance and Industry. In 1975, he received the Farmland Industries Dryer Award for outstanding management, one manager selected each year from the 2200 Farmland Cooperative members.

In 1981, Ray was appointed by the United States Secretary of Agriculture, John Block, to serve on a twelve man national advisory committee for the Federal Grain Inspection Service and served in this capacity for five years.

After retirement Ray and Berniece spent 20 winters in Florida. Most important in Ray’s life was his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ray is survived by his children, Ron Chartier of Carrollton, TX, Sue (Dennis) Hanson of Custer, SD, and Mike (Shirley Steffe) Chartier of Clive; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Don (Jan) Chartier of Dallas Center, Gene Chartier of Leawood, KS, and Dennis Chartier of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife and his siblings, Dean Chartier, Madelyn Istas, and Glenace O’Connor.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Dallas Center United Methodist Church or Spurgeon Manor. Online condolences will be welcomed at
