Obituary

On Saturday, July 25, 2020, Barbara L. Hoffman Cleveland, loving wife and mom of two, passed away at the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her father, George W. Hoffman and mother, Molly J. Jones Hoffman of St. Paul, Minnesota. She was also preceded in death by her oldest son, Charlie Cleveland. Barbara is survived by her husband of 53 years Charles R. Cleveland or “Robbie” as she affectionately called him. Barbara is also survived by her brother, Thomas Hoffman, youngest son, Jon R. Cleveland, her daughter-in-law, Deborah F. Cleveland and her three grandchildren, Seth, Isaac, and Molly Cleveland.

Barbara, or Barb as everyone called her, grew up in St. Paul with her parents, George and Molly, and her younger brother, Tom. She graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 1961. She grew up around dogs her whole life. She often spoke very fondly of her family dog Bijiou. She loved her dogs and enjoyed their companionship throughout her entire life.

Barb attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. It was there that she met her husband Charles “Robbie” Cleveland who grew up in central Missouri. Charles had just returned home from serving in the United States Army. They were married in St. Paul on August 28, 1967 and enjoyed an incredible fifty-three years of marriage. In 1970, their first son Charlie was born. Jon their second child followed in 1972. The couple raised their children in Apple Valley, Minnesota where Charles worked full time as a computer programmer.

Barbara’s loyalty and devotion to her family was woven into the her family’s daily life. She taught her sons the importance of finding something that they love and then sticking with it. To that end, she always made sure to be up early or stay up late if it meant getting her boys to practices or games or to hang out with their friends.

Barbara was very creative “craft superstar”. When friends and family would stop by her house, they would often find her knitting, painting, drawing, wood carving, cross-stitching, and much, much more. She also loved to cook and try new recipes. One of her best known recipes was her beef brisket.

Music was another one of Barb’s passions. Her love of music was legendary. She would turn the family turn table up full blast and listen to everything from Willie Nelson to Michael Jackson. She passed this love of music on to both of her sons.

In 2000, Barb and Charles retired and moved to Kansas City, Missouri to be closer to her husband’s family and their sons who were also living and working in Kansas City. In 2010, they moved to Indio, California to be closer to Charlie and escape midwestern winters. Tragically, Charlie passed away in 2015. Later in that year Barb and Charles moved to Waukee, Iowa to be closer to their youngest son, Jon and his growing family.

In Iowa, Barb enjoyed spending time with her oldest grandson, Seth and welcomed two additional grandchildren into the family, Isaac and Molly. Grandma C absolutely loved her grandchildren. There was nothing better than seeing her smile when she could hold her grand babies.

Barb had many friends that loved her dearly. She had a special talent for making people happy. If you were friends with Barb, you were friends for life. Her spirit for life was something that everyone could feel and see. Barbara Cleveland will be missed dearly by all who knew her and be around her.
