David Martin Hindal, 64, passed away Monday, November 30, 2020, from COVID. Services will be held January 22, 2021, at Westover Funeral Home (Live Stream available at on David’s obituary page beginning at 2:15 pm CST).

Dave was born March 21, 1956, in Des Moines, IA, to Paul and Mary (Lawson) Hindal. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and Iowa State University and had recently retired from Rockwell Collins (previously known as Delavan) after over 40 years in Calibration and Quality Assurance.

Dave was extremely passionate about music, listening to everything from Alice Cooper and the Grateful Dead to Wagner. He spent much of his time playing trumpet and/or french horn in the ISU Alumni Band, DSM Community Band, DSM Community Orchestra, WDSM Community Bands, Waukee Community Band, and pit orchestra for Urbandale Community Theatre. Despite his calm nature, Dave was a fierce competitor, enjoying playing video games, watching sports, could play a mean game of Careers, and even created his own board game at least once. Dave was a fan of all of Iowa State's teams, especially Volleyball and Football but also watched Formula 1, Tennis, and the Chicago Bears and any sport that was being broadcast. Dave also had a passion for astronomy, leading him to take the trek to the middle of Nebraska to see the recent full solar eclipse. Above all, Dave had a kind heart and was always willing to help in any way and a laugh that will be missed by many.

David is survived by his sister, Mary Creeden of Sun City, AZ; brother, John Hindal of Topsham, ME; cousins, Ann Volkers of Stratford, IA, Jan Koehn of Cape Fear, MO, Karla Morris of Platte City, MO, Patty Walker of Ottumwa, IA, Ellen Bahr of Lee's Summit, MO, Warren Evans of TX; niece, Valerie Mattingly of Phoenix, AZ; nephew, James Hindal of Los Angeles, CA; surrogate family, Carolyn Knittle, Kristin Knittle, Siba Knittle, Shane Fantz, Jillian, James, Scarlett, and Savannah Cook; as well as so many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Marie Satterlee; father, Paul Hindal; step-mother, Helen Hindal; cousin, Charles Evans.
