Obituary

Dolorna (Dee) Baker passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2021. Services are being held on January 12, 2021 at Grace Church, 4200 E. 25th St. Des Moines, IA 50317. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm with a service following. A private burial will be held later with the family.

Dee was born on May 31st, 1935 along with her identical twin Delores (Lee) in Elkhart, Kansas to Lee and Georgia Paul. The girls grew up all across the Panhandle following their dad’s career as an oil rigger, working the pipeline. Dee and Lee formed a strong bond as they faced many challenges including attending 10 different schools in 3 years’ time. After high school, Dee worked at a bakery in Colorado for a short time, where she cultivated her love of baking. Dee later moved to Des Moines with her parents and attended Iowa Barber College where she met Wendell Baker. Wendell and Dee were united in marriage on October 25th, 1958, and were parents to Billy, Britt, and Bart Baker. They spent their careers at their barbershop called “Wen-Dees” on the East side of Des Moines.

Dee committed her life to Christ in 1959 along with Wendell. She loved the Lord and was passionate about bringing others to a saving knowledge of Him. Dee was involved in various roles at Grace Church including Awana, prayer chain, and meal outreach. Besides her work at church, Dee’s passions included crafting, cooking, baking, Gaither Vocal Band, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Bart (Karen) Baker; sister, Delores Locke; Granddaughters, Charlotte Baker, Rachel Baker, Tara (Kevin) Deaton, Darcy (Jaime) Montalvo, Leah (Lucas) Nikkel, Meredith (Zachary) Hunt, and Samantha Baker; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, Brenda Jackson, Gail Atkinson, Georgia Phipps. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wendell Baker; and two sons, Billy Baker and Britt Baker.

Dolorna's funeral service will be livestreamed on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, a few minutes prior to 6:00 pm from Grace Church in Des Moines. A link will be shared shortly before 6:00 pm at the top of her obituary on the Iles Funeral Homes website www.ilescares.com
