Obituary

Betty Lou Diment died peacefully on February 19, 2021, at Taylor House hospice surrounded by family. She was born to Clifford and Mabel Thomas on July 19, 1933 in Le Mars, Iowa, and was the oldest of four siblings: Betty, Joe, Robert and Judith. Betty was a graduate of East High School in Sioux City where she was an accomplished debater with her partner and high school sweetheart, Merle Diment. She also won the History medal. She earned a degree in elementary education in two years at the University of Iowa. She taught 2nd grade in Iowa City and in Detroit. Merle and Betty eventually married and moved to Des Moines where they resided throughout their lives and raised four children. Betty was a devoted wife and mother. She loved to have her grandchildren come to visit and especially loved hosting holiday dinners for family.

She was a Campfire Girl leader, cookie baker, packer, planner and track meet coordinator. Betty was the timer for road races before running was widely popular. Betty was a gifted seamstress and an avid reader who proudly announced the number of titles stored on her Kindle. She was generous in her time and commitment to others. She found wonderful friends in the Windsor Methodist Church Circle.

Betty enjoyed travel on family vacations to nearly every state. She and Merle would never miss visiting a zoo on the route. She especially enjoyed Estes Park in Colorado, visiting her brother Joe on a special trip to Glacier National Park, and places along the Maine coast.

Betty is survived by her children, Michael (Anne) of Sylvania, Ohio, Barbara in West Des Moines, Kathrine Roth (Roger) of Evansville, WI, and Linda in Windsor Heights, and grandchildren: Greg, Nick and Kate Diment; and Benjamin and Emmeline Roth. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Merle and her sister, Judith.

A memorial service will be held observing social distancing and Covid precautions at Westover Chapel in Des Moines on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, 11:00 a.m., with family greeting friends 1 hour before. Private burial at Glendale Cemetery will follow.

Betty’s service will be live-streamed on Tuesday, around 11:00 a.m. from Westover Chapel. A link will be shared shortly before 11:00 a.m. at the top of her obituary on the Iles Funeral Homes website www.IlesCares.com
