Roger Warren Vanden Branden of Clive, Iowa, passed away the evening of May 24th in the comfort of his home. He was 74 years old.

Roger was born in Kenosha, WI on February 3rd, 1947 to Dr. Robert and Eleanor “Becky” Vanden Branden. As a child, Roger moved from Green Bay, WI with his family to Des Moines, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1965.

Following high school, Roger went on to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Drake University and is an honored veteran of both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard. Of most significance, he met his wife, Mary, of 52 years at Drake. They were married on Nov 28th, 1968.

While utilizing his intellect, skills and wit as a decades-long educator and consultant for the Des Moines Public School District, he was an artist, a home renovator, a youth group leader at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and a long-time baseball and softball coach for Raccoon Valley Little League. Throughout his life and through his endeavors, Roger was a teacher, a coach and a mentor to so many, in many ways. Quite simply, Roger was a good person. He was fair, honest, funny and loyal. With reason, he was a trusted and respected friend.

Roger loved his wife, his family, and put them before all else. He was an incredibly proud father and grandfather who took every moment shared to heart and made something, anything, of them meaningful.

Roger is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughters, Kristin (Dan) Clark and Terese “Teri” Stubbs; grandchildren, Drew, Paetyn and Jace Clark, and Michael and Mason Stubbs; sister, Margaret (Mike) Leonard of LaCrosse, WI; brothers, John (Beate) Vanden Branden of Berlin, Germany, and Robert (Monica) Vanden Branden of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Roger will be held on Monday, June 28th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3424 Forest Ave in Des Moines, Iowa. Interment will be in the Resurrection Garden at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Des Moines, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Mercy Hospice, Des Moines.
