Norma Jean Nereim went home to be with her lord and savior peacefully on June 4, 2021, at Altoona Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Altoona, Iowa reaching the age of 93. A big thank you to the nurses and staff for taking good care of Norma Nereim.

She was born January 18, 1928, in Weldon, Illinois to Carl Francis and Wanita Wanda (Lee) Swearingen. She attended Weldon Illinois Schools.

On August 18, 1943, Norma was united in marriage to Robert L. Nereim in Norton, Kansas. The couple resided in Des Moines, Iowa. Robert, her husband, volunteered in the United States Marine Corps to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. They soon became loving parents to Robert G., Vickie, Marcita, Timmy, and Sonya. They were married for almost 60 years.

Norma worked at a dime store and also at a women’s dress shop. In addition to this she volunteered at Blank Methodist Children’s Hospital in the Children’s Cancer Ward. She was also on the PTA at Brooks Elementary School. Her and her husband often rang the bells for the Salvation Army.

Norma and Robert opened a Ma and Pa neighborhood grocery store for some time, then went into owning and operating the Nereim Insurance Agency for over 40 years. She retired at the amazing age of 85.

Norma’s main focus in life was family, they were her whole world. She was an active member in her church, Central Lutheran in Des Moines, Iowa. She loves Jesus and was very deep in her faith.

When Norma was growing up, she took dance classes, she loved to dance all of her life especially to Elvis, Dolly Parton, Willy Nelson and ETC. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo, cards, watching Golden Girls, Lawrence Welk, her favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives, and Wheel of Fortune. It kept her entertained along with the grandchildren. Norma was always on the move.

She was a social butterfly always caring and helping anyone in need. You are in heaven but you live on in our hearts. Your life lives on through all of us. We will talk about you and speak your name because you will always be a part of our lives. We all love you very much.
