Obituary

Rose Sharon Gray, of Altoona, passed away Friday, November 5, 2021, at the age of 84. Joint graveside services with her husband, Gary will be held in May.

Sharon was born April 12, 1937, in Pleasantville, IA, to Floyd and Mary Avis (Polson) Thornburg. She graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1954, and soon after married her husband, Gary. She worked for Look Magazine for a time and spent many years at the Iowa Film Depot, repairing film reels and sending them back out to theaters.

Sharon loved to spend time with her family. She hosted Sunday dinners at her house, sleepovers with grandkids, and spent countless hours making and frosting Christmas cookies with all the kids. Every Memorial Day, she and Gary would take the grandkids to the cemeteries to decorate graves of loved ones who had passed away. They were so thrilled when those same grandkids, now adults, followed in those footsteps and started taking their own children to do the same.

Sharon is survived by three daughters: Cindy Howell(Fred) of Cumming, IA, Linda Carlson(Ric) of Bend, OR, and Christi Gray(Rich Kelley) of Altoona, IA; five grandchildren: Jennifer Gohring(Mike), Josh Phillips, Erin Conner(Steve), Emily Stout(Brett), and Jake Stout(Payton); seven great-grandchildren: Samantha, Kyle, Wyatt, Evelyn, Beckam, Zaylee and Slade; three sisters: Sheryll McDermott, Mary Whyle and Dora Newsom; one brother: Roger Thornburg, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Gary; five brothers: Gene, Junior, Delano, Jim and Kenny; and one sister, Shirley.

Memorial contributions may be mailed to Care Initiative Hospice, 7055 Vista Dr, West Des Moines, IA, 50266. The family would like to thank Care Initiative Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of both Gary and Sharon over the last six months.
