Obituary

Lucas Harlan Vander Plaats met his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, cheek to cheek and face to face, where every tear and disability were wiped away on November 22, 2021, in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed peacefully while his mother, Darla, read Psalm 23 to him. He was 28 years old.

Lucas was born to his parents, Bob and Darla Vander Plaats, on June 13, 1993. Lucas was born with a very rare brain disorder, Partial Pachygyria Lissencephaly, resulting in life-long physical and mental disabilities requiring 24-hour care. While severely limited in “normal” activities … Lucas loved car rides, loud music, the Iowa Hawkeyes, his roommates, hanging with his special friend, Ruth, and all who served in his care.

Lucas’ life displayed the glory and mighty works of God, clearly seen in the love, nurture, and support of many. In addition to his family and Ruth, Lucas was blessed by the ministries of Children’s Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Child Serve in Johnston, Iowa.

Many blessed and impacted Lucas’ life, and, in return, Lucas blessed and impacted many, many lives. Ruth Klein, who met Lucas met when he was an infant, modeled this through a special friendship. Ruth’s love for Lucas and her heart to serve forged an enduring bond, revealed through timeless smiles. Ruth’s friendship to Lucas is a tangible testimony of how God uses the weak to teach the strong, while displaying Jesus’ heart for those with special needs.

Welcoming Lucas into Heaven’s gates are Grandparents Esther Granstra and John and Kathryn Vander Plaats, along with Uncles Harlan and Bradley Vander Plaats and Aunt Barbie Vander Plaats. Continuing to live out the lessons learned from Lucas are his parents, Bob and Darla Vander Plaats of Grimes, Iowa, his siblings Hans and Courtney (Brandt) Vander Plaats of Des Moines, Iowa, Joshua Vander Plaats of Columbus, Ohio, Logan Vander Plaats of Des Moines, Iowa, his niece Caroline Vander Plaats, and his special friend, Ruth Klein of Sioux City, Iowa. Lucas’ light on earth is also reflected in Grandparents Dixon and Char Granstra of Rock Valley, Iowa, along with his uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and caregivers.

We praise God for the gift of Lucas' life and the gift of eternal life. We are picturing him running, jumping, talking, singing, and maybe even dunking as he enters into his Savior’s courts with praise!

If your heart is stirred to spread God’s light in honor and memory of the life of Lucas, we encourage memorial gifts be gifted to Child Serve (Beaverdale Home), 5406 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, IA 50131.
