Jerry T. Mursener, 78, of Dallas Center (and formerly of Mitchellville), died Monday, November 22, 2021, at Mercy One Downtown in Des Moines. He was born November 8, 1943, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Fred and Kathryn (Tingley) Mursener. His parents were life-long friends with Ronald Reagan, who they met while attending Eureka College.

Jerry grew up in Kewanee, Illinois, graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1961, and started his journalism career at the Kewanee Star Courier. He was also a reporter at the Newton (Iowa) Daily News.

He studied journalism at Drake University and was the editor of The Drake Times-Delphic, the student newspaper. In the 1960s and 1970s he was a reporter for the Des Moines Tribune and United Press International, and was Iowa Bureau Chief for United Press International.

Starting in 1974, Jerry served as Communications Director and then Executive Director of the Republican Party of Iowa where he helped elect statewide and legislative candidates. In the 1980s and into the early 2000s he ran his own Iowa-based political consulting business, and worked for many candidates throughout the country, including Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, Governor John Spellman of Washington, Governor Al Olson of North Dakota, and Governor Scott McCallum of Wisconsin.

There are no immediate survivors, and no service will be held. The interment of his cremains will occur later next to his parents at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Kewanee, IL.
