Obituary

Husband, Dad and Grandfather, Larry W. Johnson went home Wednesday, June 22, 2022 after suffering from a brain aneurysm. He was greeted by his mother, Mable Loraine (Putney) Johnson, his father, Earnest Earl Johnson, his siblings, Victor, Harold, Ernie, Eudora, Irene, Shirley & Louise along with other dear friends and family.

Larry graduated from Indianola High School and joined the Navy. He was a master carpenter for the State of Iowa from 1974 - 2007. He was involved in AFSCME, loved carpentry, grilling & cooking. He also worked for the City of Indianola & Adair, Ford Implement, & Lewis Systems. On May 18, 2013, he married Ellen Eakin-Strautman. She and Larry were life partners in their dedication to sober living.

In 1988, Larry became very involved with Alcoholics Anonymous, and was very proud of his 34 years of sobriety. AA became a second family to him as he loved being able to guide and help others in the program which helped him with his sobriety. Larry was instrumental in starting & helping with the Freedom Group, meetings at the Polk County Jail, Recovery in Action, Sober Living, the Salvation Army Rehab Center, 3rd Step workshops, and Ginger’s Misfits garage group. He enjoyed the men’s retreats and would answer calls to help anyone day or night. There are many people who attest that Larry had saved their lives through his commitment to help others. He was an intelligent, witty, jovial, inspirational, kind and a gentle person who made a tremendous impact on everyone he met. He was well known and widely loved.

Memorials received will be used to honor Larry and his dedication to AA.

Larry is survived by his Wife, Ellen Johnson, two daughters, Holly Johnson of Des Moines, IA, and Mindy Johnson; and a granddaughter, Nia Johnson;
