Susan Starman Hutchison, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2022 at the Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines. She was born on January 18, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to George and Madlyn (Schnepf) Starman. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1949 and from the University of Iowa in 1953 where she was active in the Tri Delta sorority, President of Panhellenic Council and named Greek Woman of the Year. Susan married Ted Hutchison on July 30, 1954, and they had three children: Holly, Hilary and Tad. They settled in Des Moines in the summer of 1963. Susan was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who always kept the cookie jar full, made checkerboard birthday cakes, and celebrated half birthdays. She planned fun family vacations and in later years, she and Ted traveled together to a variety of destinations. Wherever she went, she met new friends or found connections to old friends. She had a love of current events and politics and truly enjoyed her three years working as a bill room clerk for the Iowa Senate.

Susan excelled as a grandmother, sharing her love of reading with gifts of books to her grandchildren and hosting them at their home (known as “Camp Hutchison”) whenever possible. She had a strong faith in God and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, served as a deacon and an elder, and played in the bell choir. She was a member of Brevity Club and served on the Board of the Business Women’s Association Foundation.

Susan is survived by Ted, her husband of 68 years, and by her three children: Holly Ardinger (Robert) of Bainbridge Island, WA, Hilary Hutchison of West Des Moines, and Tad Hutchison of Seattle, WA; as well as her grandchildren: Andrew Ardinger and his wife, Alison, and their children, Teddy and Eleanor, of Seattle, WA; Adam Wright and his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Maddie, of Bellingham, WA; Patrick Ardinger of San Francisco, CA; Ben Wright of West Des Moines, IA; Nate Wright and his fiancée, Shelby Berkland, of Ankeny, IA; and Mia, Kate, and Paul Hutchison of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents. We are all so grateful that she was ours and we were hers.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment at Riverview Cemetery in Algona, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Des Moines Public Library, a place Susan frequented, to celebrate her love of books. The family would like to thank the Edgewater staff serving the Loden Cottage for their kindness and loving care of Susan over the past four years.
