Obituary

Anna Marie Dols, 93, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at MercyOne Hospice in Johnston.

Anna was born March 24, 1929 in Beardsley, Minnesota to Albert and Lauretta (Christenson) Russell. Her family lived in the small town of Beardsley for many years where her father worked at the local grain elevator. During the depression and the years leading up to WWII, her father was away from home for extended periods building barracks in Alaska and Hawaii. The family eventually moved to St. Paul where she attended St. Joseph Academy graduating in 1948. She then attended and graduated from the Miller Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Anna met Herbert Dols at a high school dance and they were married on June 14, 1952 in the Cathedral of St. Paul. They were married for 69 years before his death in March of this year (2022). They endured many moves over the years while raising six children, finally settling in Des Moines in 1965, where they became long time members of the St. Theresa Catholic Church. Over the years, Anna volunteered her time to whatever her children were involved in - Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, the St. Theresa school library, the Rosary Society, choir, and much more.

Anna had worked as a nurse before she was married and then renewed her license years later when her children were grown. She went to work at Calvin Manor Nursing Home in Des Moines where she stayed until she retired. In between her nursing careers, she did the bookkeeping for their business Des Moines Ice Company.

In retirement, Anna and Herb moved to “the ranch” - an acreage south of Redfield. They kept busy with gardens, an orchard, horses, a few cattle, and the elk. For many years, they hosted the best Octoberfest parties around. She loved watching the birds and enjoying nature wherever she was.

Anna is survived by five of her six children, Joseph (Anne) Dols of Des Moines, Michael Dols of Des Moines, Anthony Dols of Cedarburg, WI, Mary (Frank) DeMarco of Clive, and Susanne Oswald of Cleghorn, IA; her daughter-in-law, Jean Dols of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren, Cassandra (Sean) Smith and Christopher (Laura) Dols of Houston, TX, Emily Dols of Des Moines, Theresa (Kevin) Hogan of West Des Moines, Timothy (Amy) Dols of Minneapolis, MN, Veronica Dols of Cedarburg, WI, Alexandra DeMarco of Des Moines, Louis DeMarco, and Gianna DeMarco of West Des Moines; nine great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law, Betty Dols. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert; her oldest son Stephen; her son-in-law Thomas Oswald; her brother Richard Russell, her sister Betty (Ed) Lorenz, and her brother-in-law Richard (Mary) Dols.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Theresa Catholic Church Building Fund or MercyOne Hospice.

We want to thank all the caregivers at Pine Acres, Ramsey Village and MercyOne Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to our Mother.
