Carolyn Maye Hawthorne, 90, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at Trinity at Luther Park in Des Moines, IA. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am - 11:00 am Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines with services at 11:00 AM. Burial will immediately follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines, then family and friends will gather for a reception at Dunn’s Funeral Home.

Carolyn was born April 25, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Ralph and Maye (Sandberg) Jones. She married Virgil Hawthorne in January of 1973 and they made their home in Des Moines, Iowa.

Carolyn loved all children, especially babies, and she enjoyed running her in-home daycare. She cared for many children, several of whom visited her throughout the years to share their important life experiences with her. Carolyn was a crafty and resourceful homemaker. She taught her children and grandchildren how to sew, crochet, embroider and do macrame. Carolyn was creative, talented, resourceful, oh-so frugal, and full of love for her family. She wrote letters to those who lived far away, especially the young people, so they would always remember where home was.

Carolyn was an avid seamstress. She sewed clothes for her and her children and grandchildren, as well as all the drapes in her home. She loved to garden. She grew all types of fruits and vegetables. She tended a grape arbor, raspberry and blackberry bushes, and giant zucchini; although, her favorite part of gardening was canning her home-grown tomatoes.

Carolyn is survived by her four daughters, Rita Davidson, Angela Isenberger, Traci Frasier, Jaime (John) Todd; stepdaughter, Patricia (David) York; stepson, Michael Hawthorne; sister, Pamela Hall-Hearn; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Hawthorne, father, Ralph Jones, mother, Maye S Hall, two sons, Martin Isenberger and Birton Isenberger III, sister, Marilyn McFadden, two brothers, James Hall and Brian Hall, and son-in-law, Lawrence Livingston.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Boys Town Charity.
