Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Marilyn was born June 26, 1945, in Kalamazoo, MI, to Dale and Anna (Baudewyns) Merical.
She was raised in Adel, Iowa and graduated from Adel High School in 1962. She married Larry Oberg on January 1, 1966 in Adel Iowa. Prior to Larry’s death, they had just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. The two made their home in Des Moines, Iowa where they raised their three children.

Marilyn worked as an Underwriter at Employers Mutual Casualty for 25 years, retiring in 2006.

She was a member of WIBC (Woman International Bowling Congress), ABC (American Bowling Congress), Grace Lutheran Church and a volunteer at Beaverdale Little League for many years. Marilyn and Larry were avid bowlers and passed the love of the sport to their children, while mentoring them along the way. She also enjoyed playing recreational league softball with her co-workers and being involved with her children’s sports and many other activities throughout their childhood.

During her children’s early years, she spent her spare time knitting, crocheting and cross stitching while cheering on her favorite team the Detroit Lions. Marilyn collected “many” cow decorations and Longaberger baskets. Her and Larry enjoyed trips to casinos and visiting friends and family. Marilyn’s grand children and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Heather Armstrong of Bigelow, AR; two sons, Larry David (Jennifer) Oberg Jr. of Urbandale, IA, Eric Oberg of Des Moines, IA; six grandchildren, Sara (Matthew) Fay, Andrew (Kandi) Armstrong, Alyssa Johnson, Jordan Buchanan, Emilee Oberg; five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings, Ronnie Merical, Patty Whisner and Kathleen Furrer.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff and caregivers at Eden Acres and Suncrest Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Family of Marilyn D. Oberg.
