Obituary

George Frederick Wahl, 89, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away peacefully January 19, 2023, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, January 26, 2023 at Iles Westover Chapel. A private burial will take place Friday morning at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2023 at The Bridge in Johnston followed by a reception.

George, the son of Frederick and Frances (Carlson) Wahl was born February 24, 1933 in Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Boone Senior High School in 1951, and had the honor of singing in the Iowa All State Chorus.

Following graduation, he attended Iowa State for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army. After two years in Korea, he returned to Iowa State and graduated with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Shortly after graduation, he married the love of his life, Darla, on August 3, 1958 at the First Baptist Church in Boone, Iowa. They moved to Urbandale in 1960 where they made their home and raised their two daughters, Lisa Ann and Debbie.

George spent his life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted son. He was a mechanical engineer designing riding lawn mowers for AMF in Des Moines and NOMA in Tennessee. George’s life was centered around his faith. He was an active member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church since 1965.

George loved to travel with Darla. Their many adventures covered all 50 states and Canada, including retracing the path they took on their honeymoon. George’s hobbies included bowling, woodworking, mushroom hunting, tinkering, and remodeling projects. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Lisa (Jeff) Damman and Debbie (Steve) Simpson; grandchildren: Monica Simpson, Ryan (Samantha) Damman, Shelby (Derek) Lee, Rachel (Jonathan) McCann, Bailey (Brian) White, and Rebecca Damman; great-grandchildren: Statler, Teagan, Harper, George, and Morgan; niece, Mary (Jed) Januch and nephew, David (Stefanie) Wahl. He was preceded in death by his wife Darla; parents; brother Jim; and sister-in-law, Joanne.

Memorial contributions may be given to The Bridge. Online condolences will be welcomed at www.IlesCares.com

The family would like to thank the staff at Walnut Ridge, Mill Pond, and WesleyLife Hospice for their care and compassion during the last year.
