Obituary

Douglas Hebert Hein, 77, died peacefully at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa on May 24, 2023.

Born October 19, 1945 to Marilyn and Herb Hein in Des Moines Iowa, he was in the last graduating class (1964) to attend K-12 at Roosevelt High School. He attended Oklahoma University and after two years of more play than learning, returned to Des Moines earning a BS from Drake University in 1967. He is also an alum of his beloved University of Okoboji where he mastered in fishing, skiing, boating and many other shenanigans throughout the years. He served in the Iowa National Guard for 11 years including one year as Aide-de-Camp to Brigadier General Joseph B. Flatt and retired as a Captain. He had the honor of attending the US Army War College National Security Seminar in 2008.

Doug spent 42 years working for various organizations in Information Technology, retiring from UnityPoint in 2010. When not trying to catch the illusive “Okoboji Lunker”, you could find him biking, playing with his model railroad, solving puzzles, gardening with Babs, puttering in his garage and attending his grandson’s various activities.

Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years Barbara “Babs” Linn; daughter, Edie DePhillips (Randy); grandson, Alec DePhillips; sister, Judi Gaylord; nephews, Graham Gaylord (Kim) and Guthrie Gaylord; aunt, Marlys Young Potter (Ames); brothers-in law, Marshall Linn (Julie) and Scott Linn (Denise) and Poppy his loving Airedale.

In lieu of flowers and to support Doug’s passion of fishing on Lake Okoboji, memorial contributions may be sent to: Keep Okoboji Blue (keepokobojiblue.com) in care of Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, 1915 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309.

A private interment will be held at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, facilitated by Iles Dunn’s Chapel. Friends are welcome to join the family for a celebration of life reception from 5-7pm, Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at Embassy West, West Des Moines. Online condolences are welcome at www.ilescares.com.

Arrangements by Iles Dunn's Chapel.
