Obituary

In Loving Memory of Sharon Ewell

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sharon Ewell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who left this world on January 9, 2024. She departed at Methodist Hospital with the support of her family, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion.

Sharon was born on October 5, 1937, in the home of her grandparents in rural Tama County. Her parents, Riley and Pauline Head moved to Toledo when she was in the 6th grade. As a student at Toledo High School, she played basketball for four years before graduating in 1956.

Sharon attended Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) for two years and earned a Pre-Professional Certification to become a second-grade teacher. While at the Iowa State Teachers College, she also met the love of her life, Vernon “Bud” Ewell. Sharon and Bud married in 1958 and from their union had two sons, Brent and Michael.

Sharon served in many professional roles including teaching as an elementary school teacher, serving as the Executive Director of the Realtors Farm and Land Institute in Des Moines, and Director of Religious Education at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk.

While Sharon loved her work, her true joy was teaching and bringing music to her church as well as music education to children across Iowa for more than 50 years, until her final months. When Sharon was not playing music, she loved to travel, garden, and watch squirrels and birds. Sharon also greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and talking about the many adventures of her sons, grandkids, and great-grandkids.
Sharon's love extended beyond her immediate family, embracing friends from the church, her guitar students, and neighbors as if they were her kin. Her ability to forge lasting connections and offer unwavering support made her a cherished and beloved member of the community.

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents Pauline and Riley Head, her sister Irma Jean, her son Michael, and other extended family members.

Sharon is survived by her husband Bud and son Brent (Pamela) Ewell; sister Ila Jean Boerm; grandchildren Colleen (Tony) Uhlenkamp, Scott (Amber) Ewell, Austin (Abbey) Ewell; and great-grandchildren Calvin, Samuel, and Benjamin Uhlenkamp (Colleen), and Reese Ewell (Scott) who will continue to honor her memory by carrying on her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience. While we mourn her physical absence, we take comfort in the countless memories and lessons she leaves behind.

Sharon was an organ donor and wished to be cremated.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at St. John’s the Apostle Catholic Church’s parish hall, in Norwalk, Iowa. Information about the Celebration of Life for Sharon is also available on the website of the Iles Funeral Home in Norwalk, Iowa at http://tinyurl.com/y9za5c5h

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk’s music program in Sharon Ewell’s name so that youth can continue learning to praise through music.
