Obituary

Madeleine "Lynn" Niemuth, 89, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Saturday, March 9th, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church.

Madeleine “Lynn” Niemuth was born in Horton, KS on January 4, 1935, to Paul and Lucina (Hanoulle) Baudot. Her parents and sister Lucienne had emigrated from Belgium to the U.S. (Kansas) in 1928 to seek a better life after the ravages of World War I took their toll in that country. They entered the country as farmers and worked in that capacity until 1943 when they moved to Oconomowoc, WI, where Lucie was already living.

Lynn attended elementary school near Horton, KS, and then in Oconomowoc following their move, graduating from Oconomowoc High School in 1952. After graduation, she attended Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, graduating with a two-year business degree in 1954. While at Wartburg College, she met Delmar Niemuth, a pre-theological student, and on June 19, 1954, they were married at Dr. Martin Luther church in Oconomowoc. Del was by that time a second-year student at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA. They lived in Dubuque for one year, moved to Santa Ana, CA, where Del served a one-year internship at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and they then returned for his final year at the seminary. Following graduation from seminary, they lived in Oklahoma City, OK; Kansas City, MO; and Grimes, IA, where Del served Lutheran parishes. All three of their sons - Brian, Brad, and Brent - were born in Oklahoma City. Most recently, Lynn was employed by The Garrison Financial Group/Mutual Benefit Life (1975-1986) and the Onthank Co. (1986-2000), both in the Des Moines area.

Lynn enjoyed singing in choirs in her younger years; listening to sacred, classical, and pop music; reading many good mystery books; watching baseball, basketball, and football games on TV; volunteering at Hospice of Central Iowa (HCI) Kavanagh House; lunching with friends; and knitting stocking caps/scarves for the homeless through Hope Ministries. Lynn especially enjoyed her family. Throughout the years, she served in many ways at the churches her husband served as pastor and at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines where they were members after his retirement.

She was predeceased by her parents Paul and Lucina, her husband Del, her son Brad, sister Lucie and brother-in-law Cliff, as well as parents-in-law Charles (Olga) Niemuth, brothers-in-law/sisters-in-law Ken (Ruby) Niemuth, Mike (Elaine) Niemuth, Merlyn Niemuth - and special nephew, Richard Nelson.

Survivors include two sons: Brian (Beth) Niemuth of Altoona, IA; and Brent (Della) Niemuth of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Brandon Niemuth of Des Moines, IA; Brooke (Ryan) Chandler of Sully, IA; Brock (Ashley) Niemuth of Kansas City, MO; Brody Niemuth of Kansas City, MO and Brenna Niemuth of Denver, CO; as well as two great-granddaughters: Brylee of Des Moines and Briar of Kansas City, MO. Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church for Lutheran World Relief or ELCA World Hunger/Disaster Response; or to Hope Ministries (for the homeless) in Des Moines.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
