Obituary

In Loving Memory of Elizabeth May Albrecht

Elizabeth May Albrecht (Liz/Nana) 87, passed away peacefully in her home in Johnston, Iowa on April 10, 2024. She was born on August 26, 1936, in Yankton, South Dakota to Dr. Howard D. and Margaret Perry. Liz lived a life filled with love, compassion and kindness to all who knew her.

Liz attended Yankton College then she pursued her dreams of higher education at Iowa State University where she received her BA in Home Economics/Child Development. During her stay at Iowa State, Liz became a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, as well as the Iowa State NAIAD Synchronized Swimming Club.

Following her Graduation from Iowa State, Liz embarked on a teaching career that led her to Boone, Iowa. One of her fond memories was when Mamie Eisenhower visited her 4th grade class at Page School in 1974. After her 17-year teaching career, Liz moved to the Des Moines area and received her master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from Drake University in 1983 and shortly after began her career at Intracorp/Cigna as an Area Manager until her retirement. After retirement she served as an expert witness for Social Security Disability for many years.

Liz was a lifelong swimmer where she became an integral part of the Red Cross Swimming Program in Boone where she shared her love of swimming and water safety with children. She participated in water exercise groups throughout the years and most recently at Natavi in Grimes.

Liz was an avid Iowa State fan, lifetime football season ticket holder, and enjoyed traveling to various bowl games and sporting events over the years. Liz, along with her husband Lynn, enjoyed spending their winters in Florida, trips to Canada, boating at Lake Okoboji, Saylorville, and Big Creek as well as spending time with family and friends and sharing memories of her past. Her dog Eddie always by her side.

Liz will be remembered for her past services as Iowa local chapter lead of the National Alopecia Foundation, and her time spent volunteering at the ARL in Des Moines.

Liz was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lorenz Lynn Albrecht and brother, Robert L. Perry. She is survived by her adoring children, Becky Wilson (Kevin), Jon Barstad (Kat), Perry Barstad (Carrie) and Sue Thompson (Brent); her grandchildren, Hali Woods, Nick Thompson, Grant Thompson, Owen Barstad and Liv Barstad; her great grandchildren, Damien, Armani, and Desi, and her beloved dog, Eddie.
