Obituary

Lois Elaine Kumba Kjar, 95, of Waukee, IA, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Independence Village in Waukee.

Elaine was born October 11, 1928, in Sioux City, IA, daughter of George Arthur and Leda Elizabeth (Heldredge) Kumba. She lived in Lake Park, IA from early childhood until her graduation from high school. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and taught school in Dunkerton, Clarion and Thornton, IA.

She met Paul Kjar while teaching in Clarion and they were married on June 6, 1954. They lived in Clarion for a short time, then moved to Thornton in 1956. They lived in Thornton for 54 years and raised their family there. They spent many enjoyable years after retirement dividing their time between Thornton and California. When Paul’s health declined, they moved to Legacy Pointe in Waukee, now known as Independence Village.

Elaine was very active in the Thornton Public Library, serving many years on the city and county boards, during construction and remodeling of the library building.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul and a sister Patricia Huntoon.

Elaine is survived by her four wonderful children, Steven (Deb) Kjar, Scott Kjar, Brian (Karen) Kjar and Susan (Carl) Egger, grandchildren Alyssa Kjar, Hayley Kjar, Kregg Kjar, Kayla Kjar, Tyler Kjar, Brittany Kealhofer, Bailey Dillenburg and Brody Egger and great grandchildren Charlotte Elaine Kealhofer and Noah Dillenburg.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Funeral Services will be held 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 12, 2024, at Westover Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, IA.
