Obituary

In Loving Memory of Jonathan David Smith
June 28, 1956 - September 19, 2024

Jon, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 19th, 2024, at the age of 68. Born on June 28, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lyle and Nancy (Westrum) Smith, Jon grew up with a love for learning, family, and community.

Jon graduated from North Polk High School in Alleman, Iowa, and went on to attend Simpson College majoring in history and political science. While at Simpson, he became a proud member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where he forged lifelong friendships and created many cherished memories.

Jon married Sherry (Buhrmaster) on June 5th, 1982, at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Des Moines Iowa. He loved her wit and sense of humor. He greatly appreciated her support and kindness.

On September 10, 1985, Jon embarked on a successful 39-year career at Iowa Realty. He was honored for his outstanding contributions by being inducted into the Iowa Realty Hall of Fame in 1997, in recognition of his 10 years as an Achievement Award Winner. Over his career, Jon received the Achievement Award 26 times, solidifying his legacy in the real estate community.

Jon was an active and dedicated member of the Affinity Breakfast Club, holding numerous leadership roles, including president, treasurer, social chair, and program chair. His warm demeanor and leadership left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of working with him. He was also a member of the Merle Hay - Urbandale Kiwanis.

Jon was a passionate sports fan and had many hobbies. He rooted for the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers, and he traveled with friends to as many MLB and NFL games as he could. He was also a loyal supporter of Drake University Basketball and the Iowa Cubs, holding season tickets and attending games regularly. He was an avid collector of stamps and coins and had a deep interest in genealogy, tracing his family history back to the 1300s. He also loved traveling, trying different restaurants, reading, and immersing himself in music.

Most of all, Jon treasured the time he spent with his nieces and nephews, always showing them how much they meant to him.

Jon is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sherry (Buhrmaster), and his siblings: Jane (Jerry) Hogan, Jennifer McQuen, Jill (Keven) Crawford, Jeff (Michele) Smith, Jake Smith, and Jed Smith. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Beverly (Russ) Morehead, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, and his loving dogs Jack & Deuce, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Jon was presided in death by his parents Lyle Smith and Nancy Smith.
