Obituary

Judy Kay Bannister, 76, of Urbandale, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Mercy Hospital on November 20, 2024. Judy was born June 7, 1948 in Des Moines, IA to John and Nora (Rhea) Swallow. She grew up in Valley Junction, West Des Moines, graduating from Valley High School. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Judy will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the people she loved.

Her love of nature, particularly her fascination with butterflies and flamingos, reflected her vibrant personality and appreciation for beauty and grace. For many years, Judy was employed for clerical duties at several law firms and Principal Financial. She devoted her time and energy to her family, friends, and community, always ensuring that those around her felt supported and cared for. Whether attending her grandchildren’s events, traveling with the Mustang Club, or delighting in the joy of decorating for every holiday, Judy brought a sense of love and enthusiasm to everything she did.

Judy is survived by her loving husband, James Murdoch Bannister; her son, Donald F. Harris III (Michele Boyd); her cherished grandchildren, Truman and Eli; her sisters, Betty Cowman and Patricia Gorman, and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Swallow. She is preceded in death by her parents Leonard John and Nora (Rhea) Swallow, her first husband, Donald F. Harris, Jr., and her brothers, Stephen, Larry, and Leroy Swallow. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of Judy's life will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral (815 High Street, Des Moines, IA 50309). Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by funeral services at 1:00 PM and a light reception. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery at 3:30 PM. Judy’s funeral will be live streamed from St. Paul’s.
