Obituary

Lloyd W. Downing, 94, of Madrid, IA, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Madrid Home in Madrid, IA.

Lloyd was born on March 23, 1930, in Bloomfield, IA, to Bert and Bessie (Smith) Downing. He received his education in Drakesville, IA, where he graduated from high school. After his marriage to Patricia Johnson, they made their home at the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL where all three children were born. They made their home in Des Moines and later Madrid. Lloyd worked as a Pressman in the Printing Department at Iowa State University in Ames.

Lloyd was an avid train collector and enjoyed fishing and woodworking, sharing his creations with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia (who passed away in 2001), three brothers: Sherman, Basil, and Roy, and his sister, Lelah Swinder.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Sherri Vest of Madrid; two sons, Ryan Downing of Pleasant Hill and Reid Downing of Des Moines; 3 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2025, at the Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Visitation will begin at noon, with burial following at Hillsdale Cemetery, rural Madrid.
