Obituary

Timothy Paul Simmons, 58, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully in his home on May 29, 2025. A visitation will take place at Iles Westover Chapel on Thursday June 5 from 6-8 pm with an 8 pm Time of Sharing and Vigil service. A funeral mass will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Friday June 6 at 11am. Live streaming and recording of the service can be viewed at www.ilesfuneralhomes.com on Tim’s obituary page.

Tim was born in Waynesville, MO Oct 27, 1966 to Earl and Verna Simmons. He spent most of his childhood in Victor, Iowa, growing up as the youngest of seven siblings. He attended HLV Community High School, lettering 17 times in four sports, receiving several booster club awards, and was on one occasion named the Des Moines Register’s Athlete of the Week. He went on to attend Central College, becoming a three-year letterman and playing tight end on a Division Three National Runner Up Team under coach Ron Schipper. Tim graduated in 1989 with a BA in Recreation.

Tim began his career in 1990 at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, providing transportation, daytime activities, and physical education to over 800 young people. He continued his professional life as a manager at CDS Global and Dotdash Meredith. During this time, he stayed involved in youth sports as a middle school basketball coach, a little league umpire, and a gym monitor at the local YMCA. Later in life, Tim worked for Link Associates, once again providing transportation and daytime care for physically and mentally handicapped individuals of all ages.

Throughout his life, Tim touched the hearts of countless people with his compassion, easygoing personality, and sense of humor. Despite his athletic accomplishments, even later in life, Tim was always humble and down-to-earth, refusing to be put on a pedestal. As a husband and father, he dedicated his life to the happiness and well-being of his family, always placing the needs of others before his own. In the hearts of all those who had the chance to work, play, and live alongside him, Tim’s legacy will forever be remembered and cherished.

Tim is survived by his wife Mary, son Joe, daughter Grace, brothers Mac, Tony, Nick, Chris, Joe, and Andy, and sister Kelly. Tim’s family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Mercy ONE Deming Cancer Center, Mission Cancer and Blood, On With Life, Infinity Home Care, and Suncrest Hospice. A special thank you is extended to Tammy Wondelich for additional contributions to Tim’s care during his final months of life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church and School, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa, Link Associates, and the organizations listed above.
