Obituary

William “Bill” Ellis Wolfe, age 76, peacefully entered into eternal life on Thursday morning, June 26, 2025, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 28, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowa, Bill was the cherished son of Robert Ellis Wolfe and Etta Meredith (Moore) Brown. He grew up in the close-knit community of West Branch, Iowa, where he attended local schools and developed a strong sense of community and service that would define much of his life.

In 1969, Bill answered the call of duty and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until 1971. He achieved the rank of Specialist 5 (SP5) and had the honor of being the colonel’s driver during his deployment in Europe. His commitment to his country was recognized when he was selected for the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., a testament to his service and dedication.

Bill’s professional life was marked by a passion for vehicles and mechanics. He held various jobs throughout his career, primarily focused on driving, repairing, and building engines. In 2001, he took a significant step with Ginny by founding “Wolfe’s Animal Supply,” a business that reflected his love for animals and his entrepreneurial spirit. Bill’s work ethic and dedication to his craft earned him respect and admiration in his community.

A devoted member of the American Legion, Bill served as Post Commander at Bellizzi Macrae American Legion and held the position of Polk County Commander. His commitment to service extended beyond the military; he was an active member of several organizations, including President and lifetime member of the Iowa State Rabbit Breeders Association, South Central Iowa Rabbit Breeders Association, Iowa State Florida White Club, American Rabbit Breeders Association, and the Polk County Fair Board. He was also a member of the St. Ambrose Knights of Columbus, where he contributed to various charitable initiatives.

Bill’s passion for rabbits was evident in his involvement with breeding and showing them. His dedication to the craft was recognized when he received the distinguished service award from the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 2020. Additionally, in 2024, he was honored for his many years of service in 4-H and FFA, reflecting his commitment to youth development and education.

In his personal life, Bill was a family man who cherished time spent with loved ones. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, classic westerns, and the quirky charm of Svengoolie, as well as engaging with historical documentaries. Bill found joy in tinkering in his workshop, where he could often be found working on automotive projects or caring for his rabbits. His warm spirit and sense of humor made him a beloved figure among family and friends.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Ginny Wolfe, whom he married on August 16, 1991. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. He is also survived by his daughter, Carrie Wolfe (Jason Anderson); son, Eli Wolfe; stepson, Todd (Julie) Davidson; and stepdaughter, Angie (Andy) Vockings. Bill was a proud grandfather to Andi “Squirt” Wolfe (Colten Robison), Jayden Davidson, Riley Davidson, Alex Vockings (Mallory Shelton), Robert “BJ” Jones (Jade Ritchey), Hunter Vockings, and Jessica Bedard. He was also a delighted great-grandfather to Mia, Presley, Hayden, and Winifred (Fred). Bill is survived by his sisters, Cheryl, Tina, and Nancy, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy of kindness and service. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tim Wolfe, and sister Pam Damewood.
