Obituary

Jacqueline Lynette Van Manen, 80, passed away on September 29, 2025, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Iles Grandview Park Chapel in Des Moines, with a lunch to follow. Family will greet guests at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Jackie will be laid to rest in Sully Cemetery.

Jackie was born on March 30, 1945, to Harold and Marjorie (Vasey) Minor. Born and raised in Ankeny, Jackie graduated from Ankeny High School in 1963. She went on to dedicate over 30 years of service to the U.S. Postal Service, where, in the spring of 1984, she met the love of her life, Marion Van Manen. With a little help from some matchmaking friends, their story began, and by December of that same year, they were married. The two shared a rich life of companionship and shared devotion until Marion’s passing.

Jackie and Marion both retired from the post office in 2000 and made the most of their time together. They traveled extensively, visiting 48 states, and shared simple joys, such as camping, gardening, participating in Bible studies, and watching captioned movies. Jackie’s connection to the Deaf community, through her life with Marion, led her to give countless volunteer hours to Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf, where her faith and compassion deeply touched many lives.

Known for her kind heart, strong will, outspoken nature, and generous spirit, Jackie lived frugally not for herself, but so she could give more freely to others. Her life was one of service, love, and quiet strength, and her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.

Jackie is survived by her sister, Martha Hunt; nephews, Ed (Breck) Hunt and Scott (Danielle) Hunt; great niece Brittany (Nathan) Lockner; great nephew, Brandon Hunt; and many other loving family members and friends.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Marion; brother, Rick Minor; and a brother in-law, Phillip Hunt Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jackie’s name may be directed to Calvary Lutheran Church for the Deaf.
