Obituary

Richard L. Benning, 66, of Urbandale, IA, passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Richard was born on May 4, 1959, and raised in Cedar Rapids with his family.

Richard was the best friend, protector, and defender of his wife Peggy of 39 years. He was very proud of his daughters, Julie and Jessie, and even prouder of his grandchildren Bobby, Analisa, and Gabriel. Richard was a gentle, loyal and generous person who loved his dog Pearl and liked to brag about his flip phone whenever anyone commented on it.

Richard worked for the City of Des Moines, where he made many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen (Kennedy) Benning, brother, Tom; and his in-laws, John and Gert Erickson, whom he dearly loved.

Richard is survived by his wife, Peggy; his daughters, Julie (Rigo) Felix and Jessie (Pat) Duax, his grandchildren, Bobby, Analisa, and Gabriel; and many many siblings, nieces, nephews and a brother- in-law Paul (Teresa) Erickson.

Richard read the Bible that his niece Laurel gave him years ago everyday, and he knew where he was going.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 1-4 pm at The Regal Beagle, 9500 University Ave, West Des Moines, IA Food will be provided.
